Anyone desiring to become a volunteer Guardian ad Litem will be provided with thorough and extensive training in a safe and comfortable facility within their area. GAL training consists of 30 hours of instruction time and will provide you with all of the information necessary to understand the dynamics of abuse and neglect, child development, cultural diversity, and community resources.
As a volunteer, you will learn about the role of the Department of Social Services and other agencies, as well as the family court system and how it operates. You will be provided with a comprehensive training manual and given the instruction necessary to conduct required interviews and prepare written reports for court. At all times throughout your training and service, you will receive the assistance of your local Coordinator and supportive GAL Program staff.
Once you have undertaken service as a volunteer GAL, you will be provided with regular in-service training opportunities in your area to assist you in becoming even more proficient in your role. At these trainings, you will also have an opportunity to meet and interface with other individuals who are volunteering as GALs.
